In order to facilitate passage of the Engineers and Surveyors Practice Act, ACEC-SC and SCSPE began having an engineer at the state house every Wednesday for last session; the practice will resume in January 2016.
Every Wednesday an engineer was asked to come to the State House to meet with his or her House member and Senator along with other members of the General Assembly. These engineers sent notes into the House and Senate calling upon their member to come into the lobby to meet and discuss legislation.
Engineers were briefed on the Practice Act and given suggestions on points to make about the legislation, their practice and why passing the bill is important to them.
Most of these requests were honored and the respective member would come out to talk about the Practice Act. Members of the House and Senate Labor Commerce and Industry Committees were also called out. LCI Committee members are the first to deal with most legislation dealing with engineers.
These weekly visits by engineers let legislators know working professionals were truly interested in legislation affecting them and their livelihoods. All meeting were fruitful. One engineer who knows quite a few legislators talked to over a dozen legislators one afternoon.
For the most part, engineers coming to the State House were either ACEC-SC or SCSPE board members, because the program was getting started, but in this upcoming session, lobbyists Joe Jones and Adam Jones are looking for any member who volunteers to take part in the program. However, only one engineer may come on a particular Wednesday. Let Joe or Adam know if you are interested.
